American Shakespeare Center and Blackfriars Playhouse
Built as a replica of Shakespeare's home theater, the Blackfriars Theatre in London, the Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton is the home of the American Shakespeare Center. Frontier Culture Museum
A living history museum that celebrates the contribution of early English, German, and Irish settlers (as well as West African slaves) in Virginia, the Frontier Culture Museum also holds events throughout the year. Learn more here.
James Monroe's Ash Lawn-Highland
Built by James Monroe, Ash Lawn-Highland is a working farm, historic site, and performing arts site. They offer special events throughout the year and rent out for weddings and meetings as well. See what's happening here.
Staunton, VA
Nicknamed the "Queen City of the Shenandoah Valley," Staunton is the perfect example of small-town charm. Most famous for being the birthplace of Woodrow Wilson, Staunton also has a busy cultural life as the homeplace of the American Shakespeare Center and Blackfriars Playhouse. Thomas Jefferson's Monticello
Designated a UNESCO World heritage site, Monticello is known for its neoclassical architechture. Initially a tobacco plantation, Monticello transitioned entirely over to wheat before Jefferson's death in 1826. Find hours of operation and more by clicking here.
Walton's Mountain Museum
Known for its emphasis on family values, "The Waltons" tv series was popular in the 1970s and focused on a Virginia family during the Great Depression and World War II. See exhibits featuring replicas of sets and a 30-minute video about the show. Learn more here.
Woodrow Wilson Birthplace and Presidential Library
Visit the birthplace of the 28th President! Wilson was an unique and controversial leader, both an advocate of women's suffrage and the president who segregated federal employees by race. Learn more about visiting his birthplace by clicking here.
Virginia Horse Center
Hosting a variety of equestrian and agricultural events, the Virginia Horse Center is the place to learn about and see horses in Virginia! Learn more about their events, including competitions, at their website.
Nature
Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive
The Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive are the Southern and Northern sections of the same road, respectively. Known for their stunning views, especially during peak foliage time (generally in October), there are numerous hiking opportunities along these roads. Visit their websites to learn about closures and other alerts.
Caverns
Virginia is lucky to have tons of local caverns to explore. Endless Caverns, Grand Caverns, and Luray Caverns are all a short drive from the campground and feature stunning natural beauty.
Crabtree Falls
One of the tallest waterfalls East of the Mississippi, Crabtree Falls is a medium-difficulty hike ending in a stunning view (seen above). Here's some information on the hike itself, as well as guidelines for planning your visit.
Massanutten Four-Season Resort
This scenic mountain is home to a year-round resort offering an indoor/outdoor waterpark, skiing, a spa, golf, and fine dining. Plan your visit here.
Natural Bridge
An amazing natural arch of limestone; visitors must pay to view the bridge from below. There is also some hiking in the area. Learn more here.
Virginia Safari Park
This is the only drive-through safari park in Virginia, featuring giraffes, zebras, watusis, ostriches, and more, you'll have the opportunity to feed these animals from your vehicle. This zoo also has a walk-through area where visitors can view tigers, play with birds, or feed domestic animals. This zoo is open March - November, but you should visit their website for more information.

There are so many farms and orchards in the area that we couldn't possibly list them all here (although we do have a list in our office of some of the best). Here's a sampling of what's growing in Augusta County.

Blackberries, strawberries, and tomatoes are available freshly picked - or you can go out in the fields and pick them yourself! Open Sunday through Saturday, 8am - 7pm, although you should call to check availability. Payments accepted by cash or check.
Middle River Farms - 1744 Weyers Cave Rd, Grottoes

Uses integrated pest-management practices to produce pumpkins, strawberries, grass-fed beef, and pasturized chicken eggs. The farm features a refreshment stand, restrooms, picnic area, birthday parties, school trips, and RV rental. Finally, they offer a corn maze through September and October. The farm is open Monday through Saturday; payments accepted by cash or check.

Flowers, herbs, spices, and lavender are available pre-picked (or you can pick them yourself). The farm is open Monday - Sunday, May to October 31, and payment is accepted by cash or check.
